ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148 Edition 3 opens for its DIS vote
What happened
On 14 September 2026 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) opened a 12-week Draft International Standard (DIS) ballot on Edition 3 of ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148, Systems and software engineering - Life cycle processes - Requirements engineering. ISO's catalogue lists the draft at stage 40.20, "DIS ballot initiated: 12 weeks", in the enquiry phase with ISO members. It will replace ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148:2018, which ISO lists as current. The committee is ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 7, and the draft runs to 101 pages.
ISO's page gives this timeline for the revision:
- 16 February 2026: new project approved, and a committee draft (CD) registered;
- 17 February 2026: CD consultation started;
- 16 April 2026: CD comment period closed;
- 10 July 2026: CD approved for registration as a DIS;
- 13 July 2026: DIS registered;
- 14 September 2026: DIS ballot started.
ISO gives no closing date for the vote. Twelve weeks from 14 September runs to 7 December 2026. After the enquiry stage comes the approval stage, at which a final draft (FDIS) is voted on, and then publication. If the DIS is approved and no technical changes are to be made, the committee can go straight to publication (ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1, 2.6.4). ISO gives no forecast publication date.
Why it matters
ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148 is an international standard on requirements engineering for systems and software. According to ISO's abstract for the draft, it specifies the processes that produce requirements for systems and software products, including services, across the life cycle. It also specifies the information items those processes produce, and what each must contain. It gives guidance on applying the requirements-related processes in ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 (system life cycle processes) and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207 (software life cycle processes), and on the format of the information items. The abstract applies it to anyone who uses those standards or does requirements engineering and wants their work to conform to them.
